Sometimes we lack words to express our feelings. In such cases, when communicating via social networks, we turn to emoji. The history of emojis and other symbols goes back to 1999, but only recently they have gained great popularity.
A smiley face has got widespread in the Internet and SMS, however it is being used practically everywhere now. Smiley faces (emojis) mean international notions so they don’t reproduce the current speech, don’t reflect grammar, phonetic and other peculiarities of the natural language. Emojis can be classified as paralinguistic means of written communication or means that are not considered to be speech units, but accompany the latter to specify and clarify the meaning of the main message. Emojis which are rich in their diversity are designed to help complement the meaning of the statement with the focus on its expressive intonation connotation. For example, in Instagram we often add emojis of the country flags not to clutter the photo. We also use emojis to emphasize the intensity of the feelings or emotions.
